Universal sizing
One adult size with a wide adjustment range, typically around a 30 to 52 inch chest.
A universal vest uses long side straps and adjustable shoulders to cover most adult bodies in one product. It is cheap, it suits a spare vest kept for guests, and it removes the sizing decision entirely.
Fit is the compromise. At the extremes of the range the vest either has too much strap flapping or is cinched to its limit, and a vest that can ride up over your head in the water is not doing its job.
A graded size fits better if your chest is near either end of the range, and fit is what decides whether you keep it on.
Children are the exception with no compromise available. Youth and infant PFDs are sized by weight, not chest, and they include a crotch strap and a grab handle. An adult universal vest on a child is genuinely dangerous, because it will slide straight off in the water.
Test the fit by lifting hard on the shoulder straps while the vest is fastened. If it slides up past your ears, it is too loose.
