Performance level
Also called Level 50, Level 70, Level 100, Level 150
The labelling system phased in from January 2025. The number is roughly the buoyancy in newtons, so higher means more flotation and more bulk.
The new labels replace the old Roman-numeral types with a number that carries actual information. Level 50 is minimal flotation for strong swimmers in sheltered water. Level 70 is the standard adult vest for inland water and the one most anglers want. Level 100 and 150 add flotation and, at the top end, the ability to turn an unconscious wearer face up.
The change came alongside standardized icons showing whether a device turns you face up, whether it is inflatable, and what water conditions it suits.
Jackets with the old Type labels remain legal to use. You do not need to replace anything you already own.
The point of the change was to bring US labelling in line with Canada and the international standard, so a vest bought on either side of the border now carries a number that means the same thing.
More flotation is not automatically better. Level 150 devices are bulky, hot and designed for offshore conditions, and wearing one on a bass pond is the kind of overkill that ends with the vest coming off.
For a kayak, bass boat or pond bank in inland water, Level 70 is the target. It maps closely onto what used to be sold as Type III.

What replaced Type III life jackets?
Level 70 under the performance level labelling phased in from January 2025. Existing Type III jackets remain legal to use, so there is no need to replace one you already own.
