High-back
A vest cut that keeps the foam above the level of a seat back, so it does not push you forward while you sit.
Sit in a kayak or a boat seat wearing a standard vest and the foam panel behind your lower back wedges between you and the seat, pushing you into a forward hunch. Over a few hours that is genuinely painful, and it is the main reason people take vests off.
A high-back design moves that foam up between the shoulder blades, above where a seat back reaches. It sounds minor and it is the single most important comfort feature for seated fishing.
Almost every kayak-specific PFD uses this cut, and it is worth looking for even on a boat vest.
It changes where the flotation sits, not how much there is, so a high-back Level 70 floats you exactly as well as a standard one. Nothing is given up for the comfort.
Seat heights vary, so check the cut against your own boat or kayak seat rather than assuming. A high-back designed for a low sit-inside kayak can still catch on a tall bass boat seat.
Sit down in the vest before buying it. Standing in a shop tells you nothing about how it behaves against a seat.
