Light wire and strong wire
Also called 1X strong, 2X strong, light wire hook
How thick the steel in a hook is. Light wire is sharper and bends free of snags, strong wire resists a heavy fish straightening it.
A thinner wire hook penetrates with less force, which matters on light line and soft-mouthed fish, and it will bend open under steady pull. That sounds like a fault and is often a feature: a snagged light wire hook straightens and comes back to you instead of costing you the whole rig.
Strong wire, labeled 1X, 2X or 3X strong, uses thicker steel for the same size. It takes more force to set, and it will not open up on a big fish pulling against heavy line and a stiff rod.
Neither is better. Match the wire to the line and rod you are using, because a strong wire hook on 6 pound line just means the line breaks first.
Light wire for panfish, trout and anything on light line. Strong wire for bass in cover, catfish and pike on heavy gear.
