Holdover
Also called holdover trout, carryover
What is a holdover trout?
A stocked trout that survived past its stocking season and has been living wild since. Warier, better conditioned and usually larger than a fresh stocker.
A holdover is a fish the hatchery released that was not caught and did not die over the summer or winter. It has spent months finding its own food, which changes both its condition and its behaviour. Holdovers are typically longer and heavier than the ten inch average a truck delivers, and they have lost the pellet-feeding habit that makes fresh stockers so easy.
Whether a water grows holdovers at all depends mostly on temperature and oxygen. Trout need cold water, so a shallow pond that reaches the high seventies in July is a put-and-take fishery by definition, while a spring-fed lake or a stream with cold inflows can carry fish through the year.
Fishing for them looks different. Dough bait is a poor bet on a holdover, because it is imitating food this fish has not eaten in a year. Lures that imitate baitfish, natural baits, and a genuinely light line all matter more, and so does fishing early or late rather than in the middle of a bright day.
The practical marker is size. If a state stocks fish averaging ten and a half inches and you land a fourteen inch trout in the same water, you are almost certainly holding a holdover.
Look for cold water in summer: inflows, springs and deep basins. Holdovers concentrate wherever the temperature stays low, not where the truck stopped.
Common questions
Are holdover trout rainbows or browns?
Either. Any stocked trout can hold over if it survives. Brown trout generally cope with warm summer water better than rainbows, but whether any fish carry over depends on the water staying cold enough.
How can you tell a holdover from a fresh stocker?
Size and condition. A fish well above the stocking average, with fuller fins and brighter colour than the pale, fin-worn fish off the hatchery truck, has most likely been in the water a season or more.
