Gravel guard
An elastic cuff on the wader leg that pulls down over the top of a wading boot to keep sand and gravel out.
Wade a gravelly river and grit works into the gap between the wader bootie and the boot. Once it is in there it grinds with every step, and over a season it wears a hole straight through the neoprene, which is one of the most common ways waders die.
The guard is a fabric cuff sewn to the wader leg with an elastic hem and usually a lace hook. Pull it down over the boot after lacing up and grit has nowhere to enter.
They are small and easy to forget in the moment. Building the habit costs nothing.
They also stop snow and debris getting in when you are walking, and they keep the wader leg from riding up over the boot cuff, which is the other way grit finds its way inside.
The elastic and the lace hook are the parts that fail. Both are replaceable, and a guard whose hook has snapped can be tucked under the laces as a stopgap.
Pull the guard down and clip it to the boot lace before you step in the water, not after you notice grit in your boot.
