Football head

The shape does two things. It keeps the head upright so the skirt stands proudly instead of lying flat, and the wide profile telegraphs every rock and pebble up the line as you drag it. On hard bottom you can read the composition by feel.

It is a structure bait. Deep points, rock piles, riprap, gravel flats: places with hard bottom and no grass to foul. The wide head is exactly wrong for wood and vegetation, where it wedges.

Fish it slowly by dragging the rod sideways rather than hopping it. Bites usually come as sudden weight when the jig has just fallen off the back of a rock.

Weights run heavier than other jigs, usually 1/2 to 1 ounce, because you are fishing deeper water and want constant bottom contact. Tungsten is worth the money here more than anywhere else, since reading the bottom is the entire technique.
