How to Choose

How to Choose a Fishing Book for a Beginner

Most fishing book lists mix a 32-page picture book with a 416-page manual and call them all good for beginners. They are not interchangeable. An 8-year-old will not finish Fishing For Dummies, and an adult starting out at 40 will get through Freshwater Fishing for Kids in about ten minutes. So the first question is who is reading, and the second is how much they want to read.

That is why this page puts the plain listing facts next to each pick: the age band and grade level where the listing gives one, the page count, and the year it came out. A parent buying for a second grader needs those numbers more than another paragraph of praise. Where Amazon marks an age band as coming from customers rather than the publisher, we say so. The adult and teen guides carry no age band at all, which is normal for adult nonfiction.

The ratings belong to Amazon's buyers, read off each listing while this page was built. Tom has not read every book here; they are ranked on what the listings publish and on how buyers rated them. Our short version: for a young kid, get Let's Learn to Fish!. For a teen or an adult starting from zero, get Wade Bourne's Basic Fishing. Check the current price on Amazon, since book prices move around a lot.

Before you buy

What to check on a fishing book listing

All of this is in the Product Details block on the Amazon page, under the price. It takes thirty seconds.

Reading age and grade level

Essential

Check whether the age band says 'from customers'. If it does, it is a buyer estimate, not the publisher's.

Print length

Essential

Compare it to how much your reader actually reads. Under 50 pages is a single sitting for most kids.

Publication date

Essential

Older is fine for knots and casting. Expect gear names and prices in an older book to be out of date.

Format selected

Essential

Many listings default to a Kindle or hardcover version. Make sure the format you are paying for is the one you want.

Freshwater or saltwater

Nice to Have

A general book covers both. If you only fish ponds and lakes, a freshwater title wastes fewer pages.

Buying Guide

What to Check Before You Buy

Who is reading it

Kids' fishing books are short, photo-heavy and written for a reading level. Adult guides assume you can follow a page of text about knots without pictures every few lines. Match the book to the reader first. A teen who reads well can go straight to the adult guides; Basic Fishing and The Scouting Guide are both written plainly enough.

The age band and grade level on the listing

Capstone's Freshwater Fishing for Kids lists ages 8 to 14 and grades 3 to 4. Storey's description of Let's Learn to Fish! says kids 6 and up. Some other bands on Amazon are marked as coming from customers, which is buyers' opinion rather than the publisher's. Treat a grade level as a reading level and the age band as the range of kids who will still find it interesting.

Page count, against attention span

The kids' books here run from 32 pages (Capstone) to 128 pages (Let's Learn to Fish!). The adult guides run from 208 to 416. A short book a kid finishes beats a long one that sits on a shelf. For an adult, more pages usually means more on fish species and techniques, not a harder read.

Publication date

Basic knots, casting and bait have not changed, so an older book still teaches them well. Gear prices and brand names in an older book will be out of date, and no book replaces your own state's fishing regulations. The newest pick here is Let's Learn to Fish! from March 2024; the oldest is Ken Schultz's field guide from 2003, which is about fish, and fish have not changed either.

If the reader is 6 to 10
128 pages

Get Let's Learn to Fish!. Storey says it is for kids 6 and up, it follows a fishing trip step by step with color photos, and it won a 2024 National Outdoor Book Award silver medal. Pair it with the Fishing Activity Book if they like projects more than reading.

If the reader is a teen
200 skills

The Scouting Guide to Basic Fishing is written for Scouts and laid out as 200 short skills, which suits a reader who wants to look things up rather than read cover to cover. When they are ready for a real rod, our teen fishing rods page picks up from there.

If you are an adult starting out
224 pages

Basic Fishing by Wade Bourne covers tackle, fish identification, casting, knots, bait, finding fish and cleaning your catch, with the most Amazon ratings of any how-to guide on this page apart from Field & Stream's manual.

From page to pond

How to turn a fishing book into a first trip

A book does the most good when it is read with a trip already planned.

  1. 1

    Read the knot chapter first

Practice one knot at the kitchen table with old line until it holds. The improved clinch knot or the Palomar knot is enough for a first trip.

  2. 2

Pick the easiest fish in the book

For most kids and beginners that is bluegill or other panfish from the bank of a pond. They bite small bait close to shore.

  3. 3

    Rig what the book shows

A hook, a split shot and a bobber, set a couple of feet deep, is the rig almost every beginner book starts with.

  4. 4

    Check your state's rules

No book can tell you your local license age, limits or season. Look those up on your state wildlife agency's site before you go.

  5. 5

    Bring the book

A kid who can look up the fish they just caught remembers the trip. That is what the identification pages are for.

Plain language

Words every beginner book uses

Bobber
A float that holds your bait at a set depth and dips under when a fish bites.
Split Shot
A small weight pinched onto the line to sink the bait under the bobber.
Improved Clinch Knot
The knot most beginner books teach first for tying a hook to the line.
Panfish
Small fish like bluegill and crappie that fit in a frying pan, and the usual first catch.
Drag
The reel setting that lets line slip out under pressure so a fish does not snap it.
Catch and Release
Letting a fish go after you land it, handled quickly and with wet hands.

Avoid These

Fishing book mistakes to avoid

  • Buying an adult manual for a young kid because it has more pages. They will not get past the first chapter.
  • Treating a 'from customers' age band as the publisher's. It is buyers' opinion, and it can be wide.
  • Buying two Wade Bourne books. Basic Fishing and The Scouting Guide share an author and a lot of advice.
  • Expecting any book to cover your local rules. License ages, limits and seasons come from your state.
  • Reading it all and never going. Plan the trip first, then read the chapters it needs.
