What does PFG stand for?
Performance Fishing Gear, Columbia's fishing sub-brand. A product line rather than a technical specification.
PFG is the marlin-logo range: vented button-ups, sun hoodies, shorts and hats aimed at anglers. It has become a general style label as much as a technical one, so you see the logo well inland of any fishing.
The garments do carry real features, usually Omni-Shade UPF, vented backs, rod-holder loops and quick-dry fabric. Whether an individual PFG item has the UPF rating you want is a per-product question.
Other brands have equivalents. HUK, AFTCO and Simms all build the same category without a three-letter badge.
The classic PFG item is the vented button-up, and it is genuinely well designed for its job: long sleeves for sun, a mesh back for heat, chest pockets for tools and a rod-holder loop on the placket.
As with any line that broad, quality varies by product rather than by badge. Some PFG shirts are UPF 50+ technical garments and some are cotton-blend casual wear with a logo on them.
Treat PFG as a category name. Compare the actual UPF rating, vent design and fabric weight against non-PFG shirts before deciding.
